The 2009 Japan Cup will be held on July 18-19 at the Makuhari Event Hall in Chiba, JPN.
Gymnasts (male) from the best six nations (USA, GER, JPN, CHN, RUS, KOR) at the 2008 Olympics will compete in a team competition (“5-3-3” format: five gymnasts – three gymnasts compete – three scores count; this system will also be applied at the 2012 Olympics) as well as in the all-around (the two best gymnasts per nation). Female gymnasts come from RUS, AUS, CHN and JPN, for example Lauren Mitchell (AUS), Shanshan Li and Kexin He (CHN), Ksenia Semenova (RUS) and Koko Tsurumi (JPN)
The German team improves their skills in a trainingscamp for a week in Tokio at the Kunami-sports club. Head coach Andreas Hirsch will choose the best five athletes after an internal qualification with the Japanese gymnasts out of these eight: Fabian Hambüchen, Philipp Boy, Matthias Fahrig, Marcel Nguyen, Eugen Spiridonov, Philipp Sorrer, Thomas Taranu & Andreas Toba. Fabian Hambüchen is training a new super difficult element, the “Liukin” (tkatchev streched with 1/1 twists = F = 0,6), which he plans to present at the Japan Cup.
The USA sends Jonathan Horton, Kyle Bunthuwong, Steven Legendre, Danell Leyva, Tim McNeill and Sho Nakamori.
Kohei Uchimura, Kazuhito Tanaka, Koji Yamamuro, Eiichi Sekiguchi and Koki Sakamoto represent Japan in the competition
